Your 4 season, family fun, Nebraska Sandhills adventure awaits!
The Disc Golf Course was completed in July 2011 at the Valentine City Park. Disc Golf is played like ball golf, only players are using a disc, similar to a Frisbee. One stroke is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The object is to complete the course in the fewest number of throws.
The course will take you across the Minnechaduza Creek for an added element of fun and skill. Which is what the game is all about; not so much how far you can throw, but how accurate.
Jon Boothe, the designer of the course says, “It’s a unique layout with plenty of obstacles. This is more of a technical course with shorter more challenging holes. Elevation changes offer wonderful views but can make for some difficult shots. Minnechaduza Creek comes into play on the finishing holes. Tee pads are rubber mats. The baskets are Chainstars by Discraft.”
Disc golf began in the 1960s and became more formalized in 1975 with the first course in Pasadena, CA. What was once a game is now a sport. Dave Dunipace of Innova Champion Discs created the beveled edge golf disc in 1983 which revolutionized the game by bringing distance and control for players.
There are three main discs: putter, mid-range and the driver or fairway disc which can be purchased locally.
Disc golf is easy to learn and continually challenges you, with most courses not charging a fee. It is a great source of exercise and can be played with friends of all skill levels in all seasons.
The Valentine City Park is open everyday from sun-up to sun-down with the course available during those times. The most important rule of disc golf is the person who has the most fun wins!
