Smith Falls is the state's highest water fall at 63 feet. It is located on private land owned by the Fred Krzyzanowski family and has been managed by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission since May 1992.

The 250 acre park has camping sites, picnic sites, and trails for visitors to enjoy, however there are no RV facilities. 

A bridge was moved from Verdigre, NE, and spans the Niobrara River so visitors can have easy access to Smith Falls. A boardwalk makes the trek much easier and is wheelchair\stroller friendly.

Heat, cold, ice, and thawing have changed the face of Smith Falls. In early 2009, a large portion of the rock face fell to the spring river below. Use caution when playing around the falls.  

Smith Falls is located on the south side of the Niobrara River and closes at dusk. There is no camping on this side of the river. But there are plenty of primitive campsites along the Niobrara River. Pit latrines are available as well as a picnic shelter. Showers and restrooms are also available in season. 

Put on your hiking shoes and enjoy the Jim MacAllister Nature Trail - a self guided trek that is just over a mile long on the south bluff of the Niobrara River. Breathtaking sights await you and several geographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions combine to give you a unique woodland community: Northern Boreal Forest, Eastern Deciduous Woodlands and Ponderosa Pine Woodlands, plus the mixed grass and Sandhills prairie grasslands.

Turkey Feather Falls are found nestled within the nature trail, as well as many diffferent species of mammals and flowers - some very rare. Take care to stay on the trails. 

The waters of Smith Falls eventually lead to the Niobrara River. While tubing, canoeing, or kayaking the Niobrara River, you'll want to stop at Smith Falls, take a break and use the facilities located there, hike to the falls and finally resume your leisurely trip down the Niobrara River.
