Your 4 season, family fun, Nebraska Sandhills adventure awaits!

Trails Capital

There are literally miles of trails some near water, some over water, some that lead to water falls, and some that actually are water...did you know the Niobrara River is considered a trail? Sure it is...and you can bring your own or rent kayaks, tubes, or canoes.

Cherry County has trails that are right in Valentine (on the map shown in the image gallery), within walking distance of your location, or  trails you can make a destination by driving clear out in the middle of nowhere so you can stand and marvel at the Sandhills... imagine how our ancestors first felt when they saw these glorious rolling hill.

A popular hike is out to the Cowboy Trail bridge, on the old Chicago and North Western railroad. This trail actually covers 321 miles from Norfolk to Chadron. But the 4.5 miles from the center of town to the old railroad bridge - 148 feet above the Niobrara River - is nicely decked and is a scenic destination that is open to hikers, bikers and equestrian riders.

A brochure with maps giving mileages, trailhead locations and descriptions of the trails is available at the Valentine Visitors Center or by calling them at 402-376-2969.

Maybe you’d rather be horsing around? Well bring your favorite mount and enjoy; go to the Equestrian Trail Rides menu for more information.

With over 100 miles of trails, we offer something for everyone and every type of footwear including your bare feet on the sandy shores of Merritt Reservoir!
